Lactococcus lactis lactis C-1-92 Bacterial Culture

Invented at University of Georgia

Info

Catalogue Number 153351
Antigen/Gene or Protein Targets Competitive exclusion bacteria which can reduced Listeria monocytogenes in biofilms
Classification Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis strain C-1-92
Bacterial Resistance NA
Synonyms CE, competitive-exclusion, Streptococcus lactis, S. lactis,
Relevance Lactococcus lactis is a cocci, Gram-positive bacterium used extensively in the production of buttermilk and cheese as well as being the first genetically modified organism used live to treat human disease. A specific characteristic of L. lactis is that cells are grouped in pairs and short chains and can appear ovoid in morphology, L. lactis is also a nonsporulating and non-motile organism.

Controlling Listeria monocytogenes in food processing facilities is a significant challenge for the food industry. In particular because L. monocytogenes is psychrotrophic, widely present in nature in nature and can form protective biofilms which make eradication using disinfectants and treatments available to control pathogens in environmental surfaces very difficult. Floor drains in food processing facilities are an area of particular concern acting as a point of contamination potentially into in food products.
Production Details Tryptic soy broth at 37°C for 16 hours
Notes L. lactis encodes nisin (an food preservate) A and B, which are inhibitory to L. monocytogenes and is therefore very effective at controlling L. monocytogenes in biofilms
