Relevance | Melanocytes are the cell of origin for a number of conditions including melanoma an aggressive type of skin cancer and vitiligo a long-term condition characterised by patches of the skin losing their pigment. Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer. Globally, in 2012, it newly occurred in 232,000 people. In 2015 there were 3.1 million with active disease which resulted in 59,800 deaths. Australia and New Zealand have the highest rates of melanoma in the world. While Vitiligo affects 1% of the worlds population with no known cause. Primary melanocytes can be used as a tool for research into different melanocytic lineages |
Production Details | Melanocyte cultures were established from neonatal foreskin using standard methods. Culture medium was supplemented with bFGF. |
