Antigen/Gene or Protein Targets | Avian uncoupling protein (AvUCP) |
Reactivity | Avian |
Relevance |
Uncoupling proteins (UCPs) belong to a family of mitochondrial proteins that may cause a leak of protons across the inner membrane, thus uncoupling the oxidation of reduced substrates from the phosphorylation of ADP to ATP. Avian UCP plays a role as a modulator of ROS production in skeletal muscle mitochondria. This antiradical function of avUCP would be of particular importance in preventing cellular damage under hyper metabolism linked to high cellular oxidative activity and a high degree of reduction of the respiratory chain as occurs in hyperthyroidism and chronic exposure to cold. Avian UCP has also been thought to play a role in the control of lipid metabolism but may also confer preventive effects against free radical damage. This AvUCP antibody can be used as a health marker to monitor food intake and body weight. |
